<video:description>"Drive" a short music film by Hayley Young and Alex Crook - Director Biography - Hayley YoungHayley Young has been telling stories with a camera for twenty years. As an editorial photographer, she has photographed thousands of characters from various walks of life. Invited into their private residences, offices, factories and creative spaces, she is conditioned to find the magic in the details of place and circumstance. Her approach to storytelling is observant, curious and patient. Known widely for her single-take music videos, Young puts much of her creative energy in front of every story she directs. Her vision is what steers her direction. Knowing what she wants to see while allowing room for her vision to evolve as she goes, Young's work is intentional yet, light-handed. She loves color, movement and human perplexity. Always a viewer before a director, Young consults her inner 8-year-old with every idea she brings to the table.

Director Statement
Joshua Roman and I met in 2008 when I was in commercial photography school and working as the staff photographer for Sound Magazine, a music publication in Seattle, Washington. Joshua had just announced his departure from the Seattle Symphony, a position he had accepted just two years prior. He was the youngest principal cellist in the Symphony's history, and he was leaving his historic role to pursue the rapidly growing career that would pull him away from us. I was assigned to photograph him for a feature story we were doing on his decision to leave.
Before he left, Joshua agreed to let me follow him around to document his life for a photojournalism project I had been assigned for school. We were both in our early 20s and during the two weeks I spent at his side, I gained an intimate look into his parallel universe as a classical musician. While I was frequenting dive bars and waiting tables at the restaurant across from Benaroya Hall, Joshua was performing in that very hall, premiering orchestras and introducing world-famous composers to thousands of people. I will never forget the time I saw inside his apartment, furnished with only a mattress, a cello case and piles of sheet music scattered across the floor.
I found him fascinating to say the least. We became quick friends. Over the years, I have continued to be blown away by his many accomplishments and his surreal lifestyle of flying around the world to share his renowned talent.
Joshua's days of traveling to perform for large audiences came to an abrupt halt in March of 2020.
In August of 2020, I received a message from Joshua. Having grown restless with the lockdown, Joshua packed his belongings and took to his car. He was heading back to the west coast from his solo road trip across the country. The message was simple. A Soundcloud link to a piece of music he had just written. I hesitated to open the link as I lay in bed (it was late, nearly midnight). But something inside me said, "grab your headphones and listen to this".
The experience that I felt through those headphones is the inspiration for this film.
"Drive" is a force of sound that broke me down to tears. I cried for its beauty and for its empathy. Less of a classical music fan and more of an indie rock/pop/blues follower myself, I found "Drive" to be the perfect gateway drug into the world of Joshua's music at a time when I needed the catharsis it provided even more deeply than I realized.
This film is an offering to those like me, who turn to music for relief, who find peace in the sounds of melody.
Ryan Hadlock is the producer that perfectly transcribed these sounds into the environment he and Joshua recorded it in.
Bear Creek Studio is a hidden gem in Seattle's music world. Home to many Grammy award-winning recordings, the space was inviting and the perfect home for this project to take flight.
In a year filled with anxiety and fear, "Drive" was a silver lining that kept each of us focused on what is still to come. We are thrilled to share this with anyone who needs to feel the hope that we felt when producing it.
-Hayley Young

Director Statement
A CRY FOR HELP is an intimate look at the destructive power of white privilege and the impact of white silence on black incarceration told in a dramatic short film format. Lensed in black and white, reminiscent of classic films like TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, it’s an American tragedy right out of the headlines. A cautionary tale that shines a sad light on the tragic destruction of an American family by the fear and indifference of an otherwise caring witness to a crime that never really happened.</video:description>

Director Statement
A HANDFUL OF WATER is about Konrad, 85, who shoots and hurts Thurba, 11, at night. Meeting each other will be life changing for both, but the bond they reluctantly develop is under constant threat from outside. This encounter between the old German man and the young refugee girl will only ever be short – obliterated by injustice, margined by society’s constraints, stolen from them by the world they live in. When I began writing of this film a very personal thing was at the core of it: the sensation that old Europeans and newly arrived people seeking refuge come from very different worlds, but we all carry our past with us.
When talking about Konrad, he is as well a very personal character for me, somebody highly inspired by my personal experiences, by my family and my grandparents, but he’s also a paradigmatic German man of his age, somebody accustomed to being alone and on his own, somebody who dislikes being interrupted in his daily routine, a grumpy, bumpy old guy, tending to focus on the negative side of things.
Thurba is just a child. I feel very close to her, her urge to be less a girl and more a boy, her grief over what she had to endure and her hope of getting to Britain and making life better for her family. The small things she tells us about her past show a hardship that the old man maybe never experienced. I think this is what slowly gets to him: That he sees parallels in her, but he can also see where her situation is nothing he ever had to endure.
Working on A HANDFUL OF WATER made me realise how Homi Bhabha is right: Migration is an act of dignity. We are all different, sometimes almost in an agonistic position, and we got to understand that difference. But it is one single, collective story: There is not the dead at sea on the one hand and the old war stories on the other. The living are carrying the dead within them, everyone has their own journey to make and everybody takes something of the other when they leave.

The meaning of time exists in some particular moments, and the fact of time passing itself. In the story Before the Typhoon Comes, a premature boy feels restless when facing his parents’s divorce. The feeling follows him from the childhood to adulthood, and finally released on the beach. His story, and the story that he told himself take places in different dimensions of time, which is the truth of life, and the fact of subjectivity for everyone.

I initially wanted to write a story about eating disorders because of personal experience. Anorexia runs in my family. It was really only when I experienced it myself in my early twenties that I truly understood it. Furthermore, I would go so far as to say the majority of my female friends – and some male – have had issues with eating disorders or body dysmorphia at some time or other. It raises serious questions about how and why this keeps happening, particularly amongst women.

Another motivation of making BODY OF WATER is also to show that it's not just a 'teenage girl' disease. It can stay with someone for their whole life. I’ve met so many women who have massive hang-ups about food. Research shows that 1 in 250 women and 1 in 2,000 men will experience anorexia at some point. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rates among psychiatric disorders and adults face long waits for NHS treatment. The older you get the more entrenched it becomes, the harder it is to break out of. We need to change the conversation around the subject, which was part of my motivation for writing the film.Over the years the character of Stephanie formulated as I considered the subject: a successful war photographer who has suffered from anorexia throughout her adult life. The present climate is really challenging for women, if you look at all the roles we’re supposed to fill: as mothers, as career go-getters, and then our looks. We’re under so much pressure to conform. Stephanie really struggles with that. That’s why she’s so compelling. Fundamentally, though, this is a universal story about woman who wants to be something that she’s not.
I'm also fascinated with women’s roles in families, how they relate to each other and the complexities of those relationships. That comes from my own family experience, but also just watching my female friends and hearing them talk about their relationships with their mothers.
Stylistically, the film uses a lot of repetition and long takes. This conveys the obsessive-compulsive tendencies and repetitive behaviors associated with anorexia, building a complex character study and hopefully elevating audience understanding of what it’s like to live with an eating disorder. It forces the viewer to sit and endure eating as Stephanie does. This conceit has been influenced by filmmakers including Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dielman and Todd Haynes’ Safe. The visual rhythms of the repeated behaviors are key in highlighting Stephanie’s social alienation and relationship with her own body. BODY OF WATER also looks at the effects of Pro-Ana websites on anorexics, providing a timely and unique insight into how web communities exacerbate her problem.
BODY OF WATER is, in many senses, a howl at dysfunctional attitudes to our conventional notions of beauty and the body, taking these themes to an extreme, but arguably logical, conclusion. Ultimately, it poses the question; who or what is really sick, Stephanie or the world she is living in?

Director Statement
As a filmmaker, I think it's so important that we create art that reflects life. And as in life, we have days filled with happiness and sadness. Thus, I make it my commitment to bring emotions out and connect with my audience by creating films they can relate to.

<video:description>Can romantic love survive isolation? - Director Biography - Francis CastelliI've worked on a diverse range of high end projects across advertising, documentaries, numerous music videos, the occasional feature film and even art projects - the truth is, I love the magic of turning a script idea into a piece of film. I have been involved in numerous TV campaigns that have won a range of acclaimed advertising awards and the documentary "Nefertiti Resurrected" was nominated for an EMMY.
Director Statement
Trelawney Bresic's script connected with me deeply at a time when the world around us was changing, and our relationships were under more pressure than ever. Her writing inspires hope and reminds us that love is so very precious.
Our collaborative team and attracted a young and up-and-coming cast, who - as you'll see - have done a brilliant job. We were also thrilled when Malcolm McClean (cinematographer 'Oloture') offered to bring his talent and experience to our film.
Our entire cast and crew gave their time and skills so generously to help make a film that we hope will uplift people in these difficult times.

<video:description>Remember! - Director Biography - Keyvan SheikhalishahiKeyvan is a 21-year-old French filmmaker. He made his first short Vesper (2017) when he was 18 with German actor Götz Otto (Schindler's List, Tomorrow Never Dies, Downfall, Pillars of the Earth, Cloud Atlas, Dignity...). He made his second short Nox (2019) with Australian actor Matt Passmore (The Glades, Satisfaction, Jigsaw). His new one, Divertimento is his third short. Each of the actors of this short accepted to make this movie in less than two days, Keyvan was compared with a 'young Spielberg' by Lutz and Otto on set.
Director Statement
I wanted to go beyond the limits of the short film. I was lucky enough to shoot with an impressive cast in a beautiful location, an 18th-century castle. 150 people worked on this movie and made this tale possible to be told.
What’s at the centre of this story is the issue of responsibility facing a tragic event. For you, who's responsible for what happened? Who's the 'good' guy, who's the 'bad' one? Who's guilty?
All the movie deals with memory, its structure between reality and imagination allows the audience to follow what the character thinks. At the beginning, he doesn’t know more than us, he doesn’t know where he goes, what he’s getting into. We explore his thoughts and his memories at the same time as him. In other words, he lives the same immersive experience than us.
Divertimento is an experience movie as the story and the atmosphere are like one.

Director Statement
As far back as 395 AD, when the Roman Empire was being divided up, the region of what, today, is Albania was a border region. Not just politically, but very much culturally: the area had three religions and even three alphabets: Greek, Arab and Latin. This made it an area full of stories; an area that was, and still is, torn apart as to its place in the world.
The story of FALEMINDERIT was related to me by an Albanian historian. It is a story that is told in different ways, sometimes with chocolate or candies and a grateful "Thank you" replied by its recipient, sometimes with coins being thrown into a school courtyard to get children to fight over them. The purpose of this was always to hear the real language spoken to decide the demarcation of the borders. For me the children symbolise the young country, while the chocolate is a symbol of enjoying life.
The Paris Conference of Ambassadors portrays the interests of the participating neighbouring countries and the Great powers. There was, however, no one single conference where such events would have taken place, but more than 300 (!) meetings. This process started in 1913, when the first border commissions were sent out. It was interrupted by World War I, while the final borders were not in place until 1926. The script therefore takes the liberty to portray the events in a selective and compressed way.
The Balkans are a region that, 100 years after this story took place, still hasn’t found its peace. The Belgrade - Pristine dialogue that is debating the territory of Kosovo has not yet found a solution and constitutes the last armed conflict in the exact region where this story took place.
However, even more worrying than the regional conflicts are the nationalistic tendencies of today’s politics to which this story holds up a mirror. Voices of populism which were only audible in hushed tones before, have now become loud and acceptable.
Nationalistic politicians speak unashamedly of humans as if they were animals, praising dictators while breaking with allies and reason itself.
I greatly enjoyed finding and writing this script, as it fulfils my greatest desire as a filmmaker, to tell layered stories that entertain without the use of violence. I believe that FALEMINDERIT could, in a subtle way, create an interest in history and show the importance of diplomacy and creative solutions in a world that urgently needs them.

Director Statement
At the core of the stories I tell are ones that I feel simply have to be made. It is a passion and a need to share ideas and stories between people. For me, it's both the interaction between subject and filmmaker and the film and the audience that is a sacred relationship. This is what fires my filmmaking.

Aaron has received multiple awards and honors, including five regional Emmy Awards and twelve nominations.Director StatementCraft beer has changed my life. Ever since I fell in love with it in 2014 in Asheville, North Carolina, it became a personal quest to discover as many breweries as possible. The more breweries I visited, however, the more I noticed that my wife and I were the only—or among the very few—people of color inside taprooms. After conducting some preliminary research into the craft beer industry, I realized it was heavily white male dominated, from brewery owners, to management, down to the brewing and bar staff. My desire to better understand the lack of diversity in the craft beer industry is the catalyst for One Pint at Time. I wanted to shine the spotlight exclusively on stories of people working in craft beer that look like me. Over the course of four years, my team and I observed how many of these brewers fought—and struggled—to create a new narrative for Blacks within the industry. This is a multi- billion-dollar American business. Yet, Black-owned breweries are earning less than 1% of the money and continue to face hurdles rooted in discriminatory traditions. These are alarming facts. Ultimately, I hope ‘One Pint’ will contribute to the ongoing conversations about the need to diversify craft beer. May this film act as a mirror and inspire breweries to take those actions necessary to make this industry one that is more diverse, inclusive, equitable and just.</video:description>

Director Statement
I wrote and directed this short, Parallax, as a passion project. I wrote it in college, but wanted to keep moving forward and turning it to something real. I have always been inspired by Quentin Tarantino and Christopher Nolan's ideas of a non linear story. I believe you can't tell a non-story correctly or well enough over any other medium than film. So that's exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted a story that was both concrete and vague at the same time. Giving the audience the idea of "what just happened" when it ends. This short will always be important to me because this is "the first". It also allowed me to learn. There were issues we had to tackle at each step along the way, but we fixed them and that makes this short that much more special.

<video:description> - Black music and southern culture not only intersect with deep roots in hip-hop, gospel, jazz, blues, rock — they’re woven into the fabric of a rich, textured history, resiliency, and storytelling; Black music serves as accompaniment for questing, having a storied history in answering higher-callings in those who connect with them. The music created by South Carolina Lowcountry rapper Benny Starr (pictured right) and harmonious singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Rodrick Cliche (pictured left) is the same. Hailed for a live recording of Starr’s solo project A Water Album (featuring band The Four20s) at Charleston Music Hall, Benny Starr and Rodrick Cliche joined talents and birthed the innovative partnership, Native Son.Free Times historically named Benny Starr’s A Water Album “SC’s Best Album” in 2019. Starr is more than his musical accolades; he is someone who cares greatly about his community. He wants to be known as a truth-teller — one who stands on the side of people. Cliche, too, is no stranger to moving a crowd. He grew up playing in the church, and aligned with Raphael Saadiq through a close mentorship, where he was given opportunities to work and tour with artists like Joss Stone, D’Angelo, and Common (to name a few). Cliche’s debut album “Zero Point Energy,” was released this year.
Formed in 2020, Native Son is redefining what it means to create music that captivates audiences, while engaging with beloved community. Their hope is that listeners feel both familiarity and inspiration; that their songs serve as soundtracks to experiences — providing the impetus to connect with cause, striving, and rootedness in deeper senses of self within the context of culture. Native Son’s music serves as a guide that navigates and catalogues histories, the beauty of their South Carolina communities, and the proximate and emerging possibilities of their people.
Director Statement
We approached the creation of Restoration with a deep love and sense of connection to our elders. By weaving together a musical love letter of lyrics, sounds, and textures, we aimed to honor the resiliency, self-determination, and spiritual fortification that our Black Farmers have always embodied— even in the face of injustice. In a sense, the stage became our acreage, allowing our collective of musicians to plant the seeds that would lift our Farmers' voices and connect the multi-generational thread of Black creative and agrarian genius.
Our anger was expressed through drums and brass. Our empathy conveyed through keys and strings. The sins of this country continue to haunt its hollow rhetoric of freedom and equality.
As first time filmmakers, we hope that what we created is as much of a coming together as it is an artistic offering. Our Black Farm Families can never be made whole again, and while their justice has been both delayed and denied, we are here walking with them on this journey towards Restoration.

Director Statement
Technology has reshaped the way we live our lives. The internet has connected the world. Social media has changed the way we interact with each other. The speed of communication has reshaped the way we do business. So with more connections than ever before, why are depression, loneliness, and mental illness on the rise? This film seeks to discuss the issues caused by the digital integration of our society. The effects of the technology on our brains, the effects of exposing youth to this technology, and the changes to society as a whole are just a few of the many issues we will discuss. The troubling effects of this tech on us and our children raise some rather large questions. Technology itself is neither good, nor evil. It is a tool to be used in a positive, or negative way. One of the biggest questions this film attempts to answer is where the line between the two resides. While the technology seems to be giving us capabilities our ancestors couldn’t have dreamed of, it would seem these capabilities come with a capacity for harm. Is it worth it? Can a happy medium be reached? Are the tools and technology fundamentally changing us as a species? If so, is this a
problem? Is it even possible to return to a more tech-less world? Would that be better, or worse? Are we connecting, are we tethered or are we the experiment?

Grief is universal. At some point, we will all face it. It's how each individual processes it that interests me, because over the course of my life, each period of grief that I have experienced has been vastly different, with varying degrees of weight.

The Awakening of Lilith explores this idea of the weight of grief - how some of us long to forget it the minute we feel it, the very second it shows its face, and how others almost see it as a comfort. Because grief tethers us to our loved ones for eternity, every time that we grieve for them, they are there, in some way or another.

In this film, the character of Lilith suffers from the mysterious loss of a loved one. The pain is so great that she has chosen to live inside of it. I wanted to explore what that would look like, and how and why one comes to that place. That eternal night of the soul - not quite day and not quite night. Candlelight is abundant in the film. Burning and flickering in what is clearly midday or at the dead of night - Lilith does not differentiate between the two, such is the complexity of her grief.
I hope that the experience of watching The Awakening of Lilith will initiate a conversation that needs to be had. I hope that, through the character of Lilith, people may see a bit of themselves. That is my hope.
Making this film with a cast and crew of people that I love dearly has been a life-changing process for me. We have brought you a film that we are very proud of for many reasons. We hope that you will enjoy it, learn from it, and maybe see the shades of grace that are planted throughout.
Thank you for watching. Please stay through the end credits to hear the original song, "Elegy for Lilith", written and performed by Brittany Renée - the actress who plays Lilith in the film.</video:description>

“The fact that the film was shot on the actual historic location and with genuine WWII military equipment is very important. But I am absolutely convinced that no film can be a success without a tight-knit, professional team. And this film had exactly that kind of team.” – Vadim Shmelyov, Production Director
“An exact replica of the 1941 Ilyinsky defense line was constructed a small distance away from the original site, which is now a residential area. The film set included an artificial river, village, pillboxes, a bridge and a section of the Warsaw highway. For complete authenticity the film set was created using archive materials including aerial photographs.
Historians, historical reconstructors and archaeologists provided invaluable assistance in the recreation of the Ilyinsky defense line at the VoenFilm studio grounds near the town of Medyn. The screenplay, props and outfits were subjected to thorough scrutiny by a committee of WWII experts. Volunteers helped with set construction, and local residents took part as extras in mass scenes.
Vadim Zadorozhny's Vehicle Museum provided many original Soviet and German tanks, all in full working order. The UMMC's Museum of Military Vehicles, the Padikovo Museum of Russian military history, and restorers from the Trophy Vehicles Project, Military Hangar Museum, and Motors of War Museum also provided invaluable assistance in the production of the film.” – Igor Ugolnikov, Producer

<video:description>Everything we know about moonshine and moonshiners is wrong. - David Weintraub is an award-winning film director having produced over 40 films that have screened at film festivals around the world and on public television. He is the founder and director of the Center for Cultural Preservation that seeks to preserve mountain culture through a multi-county Mountain Elder Wisdom Project that has completed more than 400 videotaped oral histories with mountain elders in half a doezn southern states. Weintraub believes that understanding how people lived their lives before Walmarts and plastic devices ruled our lives is important to rekindle how WNC communities can find ways to live more resilient, more authentic lives. Weintraub has also published more than a dozen books, is a columnist with the Times-News and dabbles in law when he can find the time. As self-proclaimed environmental troublemaker for the area, Weintraub has worked with half a dozen environmental organizations including as director of the Environmental and Conservation Organization in order to create a better balance between development and protecting our natural inheritance. Finally, he is the owner of Weintraub Films, a boutique film production company, that produces documentary films for businesses and families that which to tell their story.

Director Statement
I was inspired by the first documentary I ever watched, the Edward R. Murrow gem, Harvest of Shame. Not only did it explain where our cheap food came from, but it chronicled the life of the farmworker and how our breadbasket was built upon the suffering of so many people. It taught me that not only how a documentary film could open our minds, but it could be a force for change. Harvest of Shame helped to changed conditions for farmworkers which ultimately led to Cesar Chavez and the United Farmworkers' efforts to change conditions for farmworkers for the better.

For me, filmmaking is about telling the rest of the story. In today's world, with everything black and white, red and blue, right and left, there is no room for discussion because there's no one worth talking to who isn't on "our side." By humanizing history and culture, we see our world in a new light opening the possibility that we can find our back home as a community once again. I find myself at the intersection between preserving cultural legacies and reconnecting people to their natural world. That's where a whole new world is opened before our eyes.

Although this film is not about social justice or environmentalism per se, it hopefully brings people closer to the roots of our country's history. If we can see our grandparents in there somewhere, then we can connect people to each other. To me, that's the most important thing a filmmaker can do.</video:description>

Director Statement
A look at capitalism, currency and the dollar, and the imperialism of the new system of the World Bank and the bourgeoisie.
This film is about personal profitability in an unfavorable situation. The price of the dollar is directly related to the lives of the Iranian people. With the news of the Iran-US war and sanctions, the dollar is becoming more expensive.
Meanwhile, some people are now buying and selling dollars The worse the situation and the greater the likelihood of war, the more they think about their own interests and the dollar, because they can get rich.
A critical look at sanctions
And that with these policies, only human beings who die and are satisfied with death, with war
Meanwhile, as the dollar rises, people become poorer and more miserable, commodity prices become more expensive, and people come under pressure.

After completing this in late 2015 he moved onto produce and direct the award-winning documentary, ‘After the Sewol’ (2016) and has now spent over 3 years working on ’After the Sewol’ and his second film related to the Sewol tragedy, ‘Crossroads’. In 2018, he started a new project, in association with the UNHCR, ‘Our Journey’, which is a series of films exploring the stories of the Yemeni refugees who came to Jeju island seeking asylum and the factors behind why they escaped their country.
